Sunny Day: A Good Time for Polka, Yoga, Flying a Kite and Eating Fresh Fruit

All of this can be found in and around Windsor Locks and East Windsor today, July 12, 2011.

1. According to Weather.com, the Windsor Locks and East Windsor forecast calls for mostly cloudy skies in the morning giving way to fewer clouds and lots of sun and a high of 96˚F by early afternoon. Tonight, there will be clear skies. The low will reach 68˚F.

2. If you've ready waiting for the right moment to try out your new polka steps, then tonight you should head on over to the Southwest Senior Housing complex at 124 Southwest Ave. in Windsor Locks

The Dennis Polisky & the Maestro's Men, a Grammy-nominated 6-man polka band, will take to the lawn tonight at 7 as part of the town's weekly summer concert series.

There are some rules, though: lawn chairs and picnic baskets are welcome, but no alcoholic beverages allowed. And remember to take out what you bring in, as trash barrels may not be available

In case of rain the concert will be moved to the Windsor Locks Senior Center, 41 Oak St.

3. If you're more focused on learning how to acquire fresh fruits and veggies, then a program offered today at the will probably be more to your liking.

Janet Vining will present Food for Thought from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the center, and then from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. there will be a Farmers Market Nutrition Program. To complete the day the group is invited on a trip to the town Farmers Market from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

4. Thus far you've heard about how to satisfy your need for music and dance and the yearning for fresh produce, now consider doing something that will help fulfill the urge to be a kid again and go fly a kite. 

The theme this week at the New England Air Museum in Perimeter Road in Windsor Locks is all about . Come explore the ways of traveling on the wind from kites and gliders to nature’s natural aviators.

Daily Activities include:

  • Build & Fly Challenge Activities - Go Fly a Kite, Straw Gliders and Parachutes
  • Cockpit Tours
  • Mystery Artifact
  • Creating Flight Demonstrations
  • Flight Science Discovery Cart
  • Museum Tours
  • Flight Simulation

Every Tuesday from 1-2 p.m. Nora VanHouten offers seniors a class in chair yoga.
