DELAWARE — Gas prices are surging in Delaware as the national average surpassed $4 per gallon this week for the first time in more than a decade.

Russia’s violent invasion of Ukraine has roiled the oil market, causing the global price of oil to spike and leading to higher pump prices in the United States, according to AAA. In fact, gas prices have soared 60 cents since last Wednesday.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine isn’t the only factor pushing gas prices to a record.

Less oil and gasoline from other sources combined with increased demand could push gas prices to uncomfortably high levels through at least Labor Day, according to a CNN report. Prices could easily reach $4.50 a gallon before they start to decrease, and analysts say a $5 per gallon national average is not out of the question.

The price of a gallon of gas varies dramatically based on where you live. In California, the average price for a gallon of gas hit a staggering $5.57 on Wednesday, according to AAA. Last week, the state became the first ever to have an average price above $5 a gallon.

Meanwhile, if you live in Kansas, a gallon of gas is $3.79.

Overall, gas prices are up nearly $1.50 from this time last year, according to GasBuddy.com.

The average price for a gallon of regular gas in Delaware is $4.28, according to GasBuddy. That’s higher than AAA’s average price.

Currently, Delaware has among the most expensive gas prices in the nation, according to GasBuddy. Wednesday, the highest recorded prices were in Sussex County.
