FLORIDA — A 217-pound sea turtle tangled in fishing line and other gear was hooked near a Florida pier Tuesday morning and is on the mend after strangers came to its rescue.

"She had two rods and lots of fishing line and even a portion of a tire trailing behind her," Okaloosa Island Pier staff posted to Facebook. "We cannot be thankful enough for our staff and a few local anglers for stepping up to rescue this big gal."

A foul-hooked animal means it is caught anywhere but in the mouth.

Pier employees remind anglers that if they accidentally hook a turtle, avoid cutting the line. Instead, let them know immediately and call the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (888) 404-FWCC (3922).

"Work slowly towards the beach until the stranding team arrives," pier staff said. "Follow our staffs instructions! Clear the rail and give them room to work."

According to FWC, five species of sea turtles are found swimming in Florida's waters and nesting on its beaches. All sea turtles found in Florida are protected under state statutes.
