How FL Taxpayers Can Check Refund Status

Tax Day in Florida is coming up on May 1. If you've already filed and are waiting for your refund, here's how to check its status.

FLORIDA — The deadline to file your federal income tax returns in Florida is coming up on Thursday, May 1. And for those who have already filed, the Internal Revenue Service has begun issuing refunds for the 2024 income tax season.

While Tax Day is typically April 15, the IRS announced last fall that Florida taxpayers affected by Hurricane Milton would have until May 1 to file their federal returns. The extension included all taxpayers in the Sunshine State.

If you are still waiting for your refund, here is how to check your status and what factors may be delaying the payment.

How And When To Look Up Refund Status

The IRS has a Where's My Refund? tool to look up federal tax return status. Taxpayers who file electronically can check the status of their 2024 income tax refund within 24 hours. Information is normally available after four weeks for taxpayers who filed a paper return.

To use the website, you will need to enter your Social Security number and the exact refund amount indicated on your return.

Most refunds are issued in less than 21 calendar days. The fastest way to get a refund is by filing electronically and choosing direct deposit as the delivery method. Taxpayers who do this typically get their refund in less than 21 days.

The IRS expects 140 million people to file individual returns before the normal filing deadline on Tuesday, April 15.

What Could Be Delaying My Refund?

Several factors may affect the timing of a refund delivery, according to the IRS, including:

The IRS will contact taxpayers by mail if more information is needed to process a return.

Keep in mind: IRS representatives reached by phone or by walking into a Taxpayer Assistance Center can only research the status of a refund if:

  • 21 days or more have passed since the return was e-filed
  • Six weeks or more have passed since the return was mailed
  • Where’s My Refund? tells the taxpayer to contact the IRS
