Driver Killed, Bicyclist Injured In Bloomingdale Crash: Sheriff

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is awaiting toxicology results to see if alcohol was a factor in the fatal crash.

BLOOMINGDALE, FL — A driver was killed and a bicyclist was critically injured in a crash Saturday evening on a Bloomingdale street, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Just before 5:30 p.m., a 2018 Kia Stinger was approaching the intersection of Nature's Way Boulevard and Golf Meadow Boulevard when the driver lost control of the car, which crashed into a tree and flipped over, hitting a bicyclist, according to investigators.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and the bicyclist was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition, the sheriff's office said.

"Our traffic homicide detectives are processing the scene and waiting for toxicology results that would reveal whether alcohol was a factor in this crash," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "At this point, we know the vehicle was driving over the speed limit. This is a tragic example of the importance of obeying traffic laws and making safety the top priority. Tonight, one person is dead and another is fighting for their life due to reckless driving."
