The Health Department offers tips to avoid mosquito-borne illness, its time to scour those back to school ads and the City Council is set to whittle away at its proposed budget today.

The commissioners will designate $800,000 in county savings from this year allowing the sheriff to hire up to 11 new deputies in the coming fiscal year. By cutting the total numbers of new deputies in half and using savings from the budget, the county will avoid an increase to the millage in the coming year.

When not covered, use repellents containing DEET. Picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and IR3535 are other options. If mosquitos are bad, permethrin repellent can be applied directly to clothing. Infants should be kept inside. The final D? Drainage: Get rid of any standing water around your house. It's where mosquitoes lay their eggs. The state Department of Health is conducting statewide surveillance for mosquito borne illnesses, including West Nile virus, Eastern Equine Encephalitis, St. Louis Encephalitis, malaria and dengue.
