5 Things You Need To Know Today: December 16
Manatee Avenue in the downtown area will be closed on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., dog and cat adoption special today and Manatee High's Hurricanes go to the Citrus Bowl tonight.

1. It's the big night for Manatee High School. The Hurricanes head to the Citrus Bowl to play First Coast. Kick-off is at 7 p.m. in Orlando. Tickets are on sale at Manatee High School until 10 a.m.
2. The northbound parking lane and a portion of the northbound travel lane on 12th Street West between Manatee and 6th Avenues west will be closed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday for construction at the courthouse.
3. Animal Network Inc. and Manatee County Animal Services are hosting a December Adoption Event Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Animal Services building at 305 25th Street W. in Palmetto. Dogs will be available for $30 and cats for $10. All adoptions include, vaccinations, rabies tag and certificate, health check and spay or neuter.

4. Get Down Downtown takes place tonight. Old Main Street will be closed for the event from 2:30 p.m. until after 11 p.m. Cars parked on the street after 2:30 p.m. will be towed.
5. The Palmetto Police department is working with New Life Baptist Church to host a gun buyback program Saturday. Anyone who turns in a weapon will receive a $25 gift certificate. The event will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. During the buyback, residents may turn in prescription drugs, firearms and other weapons with no questions asked. New Life Baptist is located at 609 9th St. W., Palmetto.
