5 Things You Need To Know Today: December 1

International soccer continues this week in Lakewood Ranch, the City Council gives their nod to the Pink Palace project and the Manatee Players production of White Christmas opens tonight.

1. The 2011 Development Academy Winter Showcase and Nike International Friendlies continue all week at the Premier Sports Campus in Lakewood Ranch. All 78 Academy clubs will travel to Lakewood Ranch for three games of non-conference play during the Winter Showcase, which will take place from Dec. 2-6. The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team, will face off against Brazil, France and Turkey during the Nike International Friendlies.

2. Renovations will begin on the Pink Palace since the to the project.

3.The production of White Christmas opens tonight. Based on the film, this musical adaptation features seventeen Irving Berlin songs. The show is being directed and choreographed by Rick Kerby with Bobby Brader as musical director. 4. has received a $30,000 grant from Publix Super Market Charities Inc. The grant will be used for the construction of new Habitat homes in Ellenton Hope Landing neighborhood, which includes 18 homes and is built entirely with energy efficient construction techniques. These techniques will provide Habitat homeowners with “green” features resulting in increased savings to families. A letter from Publix’s President Carol  J. Barnett  to Manatee Habitat stated “we believe Habitat for Humanity exemplifies that mission and we are pleased to be a part of your efforts.”
