5 Things You Need To Know Today: February 2

D.C. United will take on the Swedes at IMG Academies, Hemingway is at the Crosley and new patterns in traffic lighting have officials urging caution on the roads.

1. D.C. United will square off with Swedish pro team Malmö FF in a scrimmage at 10:30 a.m. today. The game will take place on Field 1 at the accessible by 43rd Street West/Bollettieri Boulevard. Both teams have been training at IMG Academies, along with the Columbus Crew, to prepare for their respective seasons. A second professional game between Malmö FF and Columbus Crew will take place Feb. 8 at 10:30 a.m. The Seattle Sounders are also scheduled for pre-season training at IMG. They will take on the Columbus Crew in a game to be scheduled.

2. The Manatee Tiger Bay Club will offer a "Diagnosis of the Health Status of Manatee County" at itoday's 11:30 a.m. meeting. The guest panel includes: Jennifer Bencie, MD, director Manatee County Department of Health; Mary Ruiz, president/CEO Manatee Glens and director of Manatee Healthcare Allianc; and Jonathan Fleece, health care attorney, Blalock Walters and co-author of The New Health Age. They will talk about how Manatee County stacks up to neighboring counties and the State of Florida for significant health indicators, like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and teen pregnancy.  They will also discuss how to improve the county's health profile. 3. Chick-fil-A at Creekwood Crossing will be host a mother-son date night on Saturday, from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The restaurant will host about 150 mothers and sons. Live music, free photos, activities, the Chick-fil-A Knight and Princess cows, and tableside service are all added features to make this a memorable event. 4. These are the final days for Hemingway at the Crosley. Final performances are today and Friday. In the show, Gwendolyn Crosley invites Ernest Hemingway into her home for performances of some of his best-loved works. A few of his literary counterparts, along with some special guests from the silent silver screen, join Hemingway. Tickets are $20 for evening shows and $15 for matinees if purchased in advance, children 12 and under are $10. Tickets purchased at the door are an additional $5. 5. Manatee County officials warn local drivers to use extra caution on major thoroughfares in coming months as traffic signals are adjusted and retimed as part of the Advanced Traffic Management System. The project is designed to better coordinate more than 230 traffic signals in the county, but it will not mean a continuous chain of green lights around town during rush hours. During the signal retiming period, drivers may notice signals and their timing is different.
