5 Things You Need To Know Today: February 3

Entertainment tonight includes Film Friday and a walk through Village of the Arts and middle and high school students will converge on the State College of Florida on Saturday.

1. It's film Friday at the and this week's Oscar winning film is "On the Waterfront." The South Florida Museum salutes Hollywood’s biggest successes during award show season as Academy Award Best Picture winners from the past 80 years are featured as part of the “And the Winner Is...” Film Fridays series. The new Film Fridays series will run through March 16. Tonight Marlon Brando is featured as an ex-prize fighter turned longshoreman who struggles to stand up to corrupt union bosses. All screenings are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. in the South Florida Museum’s all-digital Bishop Planetarium Theater located at 201 10th Street W. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for general admission with discounted rates of $3 for Museum Members. 2. Tonight kicks off the Village of the Arts ArtWalk this weekend. Stroll around this area of artists studios, galleries, shops and cafes. Many galleries host monthly openings during the artwalk and there is always something new to see. 3. Gene Page, IV, will chronicle the experiences that shaped his career as an artist and photojournalist on Saturday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Palmetto Art Center. Page will speak about his passion for underwater photography and his experiences photographing Hollywood stars including Charlize Theron, John Travolta, Colin Farrell, Drew Barrymore and most recently Jack Black. Page's maternal grandfather was an artist and maritime historian on Anna Maria Island, who influenced his interests in water, history, and travel. After his years in the service, Page earned a degree in Photojournalism from the University of Florida and a graduate degree in Fine Arts from Long Island University. He has worked as a photojournalist with newspapers across the nation. The symposium is open to all ages. Admission is free, though seating is limited. 4. Majical Miniatures will hold a communtiy yard sale at 16406 Golf Course Rd. in Parrish to benefit Majical Miniatures Animal Sanctuary on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Donated items for the sale will be accepted today. 5. More than 500 middle and high school students representing five counties will converge on the Bradenton campus of State College of Florida on Saturday,  when SCF and the Manatee County School District host the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) District 18 Leadership Conference. More than 20 middle and high schools from DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Manatee and Sarasota counties will compete in a variety of business-related contests including impromptu speaking, entrepreneurship, digital video, job interview, and management decision making. Students who win competitions at the District level will advance to compete at the FBLA State Conference to be held in Orlando in April.
