5 Things You Need To Know Today: October 10

The school board meets tonight, Blake Medical Center hosts an exercise class for breast cancer patients and Jerry Koontz is on a fundraising mission.

1. The Manatee County School Board meets tonight at 5:45 p.m. On the agenda are a sales tax accountability report and an update on the schools transition to the computer program.

2. The meets Tuesday at 9 a.m. There will be three public hearings on adoption of the state's new firearms organizations, license fees for sexually-oriented buildings and adopting the uniform statewide procedures for the use of cameras to enforce red light violations. Also on the agenda, the county commissioners are set to adopt a plan to make Manatee County a no-kill community by December 2012. The 1:30 p.m. session will feature a couple of celebrities. Jamie Gregorich and We The Kings will be on hand at the meeting to accept proclamations from the County Commissioners.

3. , the retired executive director of the United Way, is on a mission to raise $600,000 to help pay for his daughter's transplant surgery. His daughter, a type 1 diabetic, is in need of a new kidney and a new pancreas. A website has been set up for tax-deductible donations for her medical care.

4. customers are eligible for a rebate of up to $100 per replaced toilet for every high-volume toilet that is replaced with a low-volume model. There is a limit of two toilets. New low-volume toilets use up to 1.6 gallons per flush, while older models may use up to 5 gallons per flush. The program is estimated to conserve as much as 10,900 gallons of water per day. The total cost of the program is being shared between the Southwest Florida Water Management District and Manatee County. The rebate application must be approved prior to purchasing and installing the new low-volume toilet.  Customers may apply by calling (800) 964-2140 or by e-mailing the program administrator at MCRebate77@yahoo.com.

5. is hosting an exercise class today from noon to 1 p.m. for those in recovery from breast cancer. The class will be held in the Cancer Resource room, suite 3400, 2010 59th St. W. Exercise is an important component in the recovery process to breast cancer. The hospital staff will teach techniques to improve breast health, prevent and minimize risk of Lymphedema, increase range of motion, increase strength, and improve overall well being.
