5 Things You Need to Know Today: September 14

Trauma Center at Blake Medical Center moving forward, Jose's Real Cuban Food to have a viewing party for its national television debut and the United Way is working to raise $2.9 million in this year's campaign.

1. is moving forward in opening its trauma center. Hospital officials told county commissioners on Tuesday that they will file their application with the state before the end of the month and that they expect to be given provisional status, which allows for one year of operations, on Nov. 1. Once that happens trauma cases can go to Blake in west Bradenton, rather than being diverted to Bayfront Medical Center or to Tampa. The time savings, hospital officials said, could help save more lives.

2. During Tuesday's campaign kick-off, the announced that it's fundraising goal is $2.9 million. It's an ambitious goal that comes just after Jerry Koontz, executive director for the agency, resigned. The agency's executive committee appointed board member Bob Thompson as Board Liaison. Bob will serve in this capacity as the Board of Directors fine tunes the organization’s strategic plan. Bronwyn Beightol and Sara Rankin Wilson will manage the United Way’s day-to-day operations. Beightol will serve as Vice President of Community Investment and Rankin Wilson will serve as Vice President of Resource Development.

3. As the restaurant makes its national television debut, is having a viewing party on Monday at 7 p.m. across the street from their restaurant at , 4343 Palma Sola Blvd. There will be live blues music and of course you can watch Jose on the Food Network's Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives!

4. It's teen movie night at . The movie begins at 6 p.m. and popcorn, cookies, and soda are provided. Those ages 10 to 18 are welcome to attend. Call 748-5555 ext. 6310 to find out movie title. Here's a hint: Think Brazil and birds.

5. Patch will be out at the Thursday morning to help sort contributions in the warehouse -- and whatever other chores that need to be done. Come on by between 10 a.m. and noon and drop off your contributions. The center needs jeans, shoes, socks, mosquito repellent, underwear for children, men and women, children's clothing and shoes, toothbrushes, tools, tool belts, work boots, wash cloths, towels, garbage bags and non-perishable foods. The medical center is in need of digital thermometers, gauze, antibiotic ointment, A & D ointment, sunscreen and bandages. And if you just want to join us in sorting, come on out.
