Adoptable Dog of the Week: Sugar is Timid but Sweet

She's just one of the pets up for adoption at the county's downtown center.

This week's adoptable pet is Sugar, a sweet but timid labrador retreiver mix.

Sugar, a 2-year-old spayed female, is shy at first but will warm up. She's a little shy about having her photo taken and about playing with toys. She has been with Manatee County Animal Services since Sept. 8, when she was found abandoned in Rubonia. You can visit Sugar at the county's downtown adoption center or at the Palmetto adoption center for Animal Services next week. The downtown center is open even though a fence sits along the sidewalk.

December is a great month to adopt. Manatee County Animal Services is offering a Christmas adoption special throughout the month of December. Adopt dogs for $40 and cats for $20, the price includes spay/neuter, vaccinations, health check, microchip and current rabies certificate/tag, a savings of $50 off dogs and $40 off cats. This adoption special is another step in the County’s plan to become a no-kill community.

The county has had progressive success with its no-kill plan. During November, the county had a 77 percent save rate. Of 184 dogs impounded and 161 cats impounded, Animal Services transferred 47 dogs and 83 cats to rescue groups or foster homes. The agency returned 39 dogs and 2 cats to their owners. During November 48 dogs and 8 cats were adopted. The agency had to kill 21 dogs and 58 cats.
