Bradenton Nurse Who Aided Marathon Victims Is Honored

It was "a blessing to be there that day, despite what happened," Katie Powers told the City Council.

A 30-year Bradenton nurse who tended to the wounded after the Boston Marathon bombings has been recognized by city leaders for her heroism.

Bradenton.com is reporting that Katie Powers, who works at Manatee Hospital,  received the key to the city. April 24 also has been designated Katie Powers Day. Powers had been in Boston to volunteer at a runners' aid tent.

According to Bradenton.com, Mayor Poston said:

"She demonstrated courage under fire. Katie choose to stay and save lives. Simply said that is who Katie is."

Powers accepted the key to the city during this week's City Council meeting. Powers, who was weating her Boston Marathon jacket, said she accepted the awards with "gratitude and humility," according to Bradenton.com

Powers told the Council: "It was an honor and a blessing to be there that day, despite what happened."
