Burglary Nets $28,000 in Guns, Cash and Jewelry

Burglars ransacked house and took two safes containing two dozens guns, cash and jewelry

Deputies are searching for theives who broke into a Palmetto home today and took a 700-pound safe containing 23 guns and a 50-pound safe that was bolted to the wall, according to a sheriff's report.

The thieves were able to break into the house and haul out two safes without being seen by anyone in the area,

The thieves smashed a front window of the home in the 3000 block of 105th Street East in Palmetto. The window opened into a home office. Once inside, they ransacked the office and two bedrooms before taking the two safes.

The victim is a member of the Manatee gun club and told deputies that he did not know who would have robbed his home. The large stand up safe held 23 guns valued at about $15,000. The thieves also took a smaller, 50-pound safe from the wall of the master bedroom. That safe contained about $7,000 in cash, $3,000 in jewelry and coins and $3,000 in savings bonds.

Deputies canvassed the neighborhood but didn't find anyone who saw anything. Deputies said they have no suspects or witnesses.
