Deputy Crashes Trying to Avoid a Possum in the Road

The officer was taken to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center for treatment. His vehicle, which had $8,000 in damages, was towed from the scene.

A Manatee County deputy was treated for injuries at a local hospital after he swerved to avoid a possum in the middle of the road and crashed his patrol vehicle.

Deputy Andrew Grana was traveling north on Morgan Johnson Road when he swerved to avoid the possum, according to a Manatee County Sheriff's report. After swerving to the left he apparently over corrected the vehicle on the wet road and lost control.

According to the Sheriff's report, the patrol car went into a ditch and the front of the car hit a concrete culvert, causing the airbag to deploy. The back of the vehicle hit a wooden fence, causing damage to the driver's side rear quarter panel. The patrol car sustained about $8000 in damage and had to be towed from the scene. The fence damage was approximately $450.
