Deputy Deploys Taser During a Traffic Stop

Woman's license had been suspended for failure to appear in court in Sarasota.

A Manatee County deputy used a stun gun on a woman during a traffic stop after she refused to get out of her car, according to a sheriff's report.

According to the report, Shantee R. Goodson, 23, was stopped Thursday morning in the 3000 block of 1st Street East for speeding. During the stop, the deputy discovered that Goodson's license was suspended in Sarasota for failure to appear in court on charges of resisting arrest with violence.

The deputy told Goodson she was being arrested and to get out of the car. The Bradenton woman refused and asked to see a supervisor. She also picked up her cell phone to call someone.

At that point the deputy pulled Goodson out of her vehicle and locked the handcuffs on her right wrist, but Goodson fought the deputy, who was trying to cuff her left wrist. The deputy warned Goodson that if she did not stop resisting arrest, she would be Tasered. When Goodson continued to put up a fight, the deputy used the stun gun.

According to the report, Goodson continued to resist arrest even after she was stunned with the Taser gun, and when she was put in the patrol car she tried unsuccessfully to kick out the rear window.
