Minor Injuries Result After Mother and Son Fight Over Handgun

The 23-year-old son is arrested on charges of domestic battery.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on charges of domestic battery Sunday after he and his mother fought over a handgun in her closet, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Parker C. Rusin, 23 was arrested Sunday afternoon after shoving his mother as he tried to take a handgun out of her closet. His mother, Karen C. Rusin, 58, is also facing possible charges of aggravated assault after she shot the gun in the house in the 600 block of 51st Street NW while trying to keep her son away from her, according to a Sheriff's report. The bullet shattered glass which fell on Parker Rusin, cutting him.

The fight began when Parker Rusin told his mother, Karen Rusin, that he wanted a handgun in her room.  She refused to give him the firearm and they started to argue. 

When Parker Rusin tried to go get the gun from her closet, his mother told him to leave her room. Parker Rusin then tried to shove his mother out of the way.  Karen Rusin got into the closet as her son was going for the box where she kept the guns. She knocked the box out of her son's hand and then Parker Rusin shoved his mother to the floor. That's when Karen Rusin grabbed a handgun and hit her son with it in an attempt to get him away from her.

Parker Rusin left the bedroom and his mother locked the door behind him. Parker Rusin then kicked the locked door and as the door started to crack, Karen Rusin told her son that that if he came in her room she would shoot him. 

Karen Rusin then opened the blind and raised the firearm up to show her son she had a gun. The firearm, which was pointed upward, went off. The bullet went through the glass in the door, shattering the Shards of the broken window hit Parker Rusin, who received cuts to his neck and chest. 

Emergency Medical Services responded, but said Parker Rusin did not require treatment.

As the primary aggressor, Parker Rusin was arrested for domestic battery, according to the sheriff's report.  A capias request was submitted for Karen Rusin for charges of aggravated assault.
