Titanic Exhibit Opening in St. Pete Saturday

One hundred years ago, the magnificent Titanic sunk after colliding with an iceberg in the Atlantic. More the 1,500 lives and countless artifacts were lost. 

You can get a glimpse of some of those recovered artifacts at Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition beginning on Saturday. The exhibit runs through March 3 at the Mahaffey Theater. 

Inside the exhibit you'll see artifacts never before seen in Tampa Bay, including plates, coal, clothing and much more. According to the Mahaffey, the galleries focus on the legendary Titanic’s compelling human stories as best told through artifacts recovered from the ocean floor and extensive room re-creations. 

“This is a rare opportunity to view these historic pieces,” said Joe Santiago, The Mahaffey's General Manager. “It took a monumental effort to recover the artifacts, including seven trips to the wreckage located 2.5 miles beneath the Atlantic. This exhibit combines that technical story with the human drama that makes the Titanic tragedy such a well-known event.” 

The exhibit will also showcase actors portraying individuals who were on the ship on April 15, 1912. Patrons will also travel through a re-created first and third class cabins while being able to put their hands against a freezing iceberg.

Visitors to the exhibit will receive a replica boarding pass granting them permission to “board” the White Star Line's R.M.S. Titanic, and from there the journey begins.
