Toddler Mauled By At Least 1 Of Grandmother's Pit Bulls

A toddler was mauled by at least one of his grandmother's two pit bulls in Florida one day before his third birthday

BRADENTON, FL -- A toddler was mauled by at least one of his grandmother's two pit bulls in Florida one day before his third birthday.

The attack happened Saturday afternoon around 2:39 p.m. in the 1200 block of 30th Avenue East in Bradenton, Florida, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The toddler was to celebrate his third birthday on Sunday.

"The victim’s grandmother reported that her two pit bull dogs were attacking her three-year-old grandson," the sheriff's office said. "EMS arrived on scene and quickly administered first aid to the child."

The sheriff's office said that the toddler was air lifted to a regional hospital in critical condition.

"According to an eyewitness, the 3-year-old pit bull was out of his contained area laying by a fence line in the shade," the sheriff's office explained. "The victim walked from the front of the residence to the area where the dog was at. For unknown reasons the dog jumped up and attacked the victim, causing severe injury to his head."

The child's grandmother and aunt were able to get the pit bull to let go of the child.

"The animal in question and another pit bull were contained," the sheriff's office said. "Animal Control responded and took custody of the two dogs. It is unknown at this time if the other dog was involved."
