Update: 'Armed and Dangerous' Suspect Caught

The "armed and dangerous" suspect wanted in a shooting and robbery has been taken into custody without incident, Clearwater Police said Tuesday afternoon.

Police receieved a tip on the whereabouts of the suspect, Preston Bell, and found him in a friend's Fulton Street apartment shortly after 1 p.m., according to public safety spokesperson Elizabeth Watts.

A SWAT team was called in because Bell was possibly armed, Watts said. He was taken into custody and was being interviewed by detectives Tuesday afternoon.

Clearwater Police are searching for a man who they say pistol whipped and shot a victim during an apparent robbery early Tuesday morning.

Preston Bell, 26, of Clearwater, "should be considered armed and dangerous," public safety spokesperson Elizabeth Watts said in a media release.

Authorities say Bell pistol whipped and shot a man sometime around 1:20 a.m. Tuesday in the area of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and LaSalle Street. The victim, 22-year-old Jacob Woods, ran to the 900 block of Engman Street, where the incident was reported to police.

Woods was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Bell has a lengthy history of arrests dating back to at least 2005, according to online records with the Pinellas County Jail, for charges including possession and sale of crack cocaine, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, battery of a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest.
