Couple Hid Woman’s Body Since The Super Bowl: Cops

Clearwater Police say a 69-year-old woman was killed by a tenant following the Super Bowl. Her body was discovered Feb. 20.

CLEARWATER, FL — The Monday discovery of a woman’s body inside a Clearwater home resulted in two arrests. One of the 69-year-old woman’s tenants stands accused of shooting her. The other is accused of trying to help the first determine how to get rid of the body.

The Clearwater Police Department says its officers made the grisly discovery on Monday, Feb. 20, when they were called out to a home in the 1100 block of Engman Street to perform a welfare check. That check turned up the body of Mary Ring, an email from the agency said.

Ring, police say, was shot and killed in the early morning hours after the Super Bowl. Her tenant Lawrence Edward Cannon, 42, has since been charged with first-degree murder.

While police did not say what prompted the shooting, they said “Cannon told detectives that he shot Ring.”

Ring’s other tenant, Jennifer Elam, 45, is accused of being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.

“Cannon and Elam told detectives they spent the last two weeks trying to figure out how to dispose of the victim’s body,” the email said. Ring’s body had been kept inside the house since the shooting, the agency noted.

Cannon was being held in the Pinellas County Jail Tuesday without bond. Elam’s bond had been set at $50,000, according to jail records.

No further information is being released at this time.
