Fiery Crash Causes Sand Key Bridge Delays

A Nissan Rogue crashed into Cesare's at the Beach early Saturday morning.

CLEARWATER, FL — A fiery Saturday morning crash on South Gulfview Boulevard is causing some delays along the Sand Key Bridge, according to Clearwater Police. The crash sent an 18-year-old man to the hospital and left damage behind at Cesare’s at the Beach.

According to police, the crash happened just before 7:30 a.m. April 22. The 18-year-old was driving a Nissan Rouge north on the bridge when he attempted to make a left turn onto South Gulfview Boulevard.

“That’s when the vehicle went out of control, flipping several times before crashing into the front of Cesare’s at the Beach,” an email from the police department said. “The vehicle caught fire and bystanders were able to pull the 18-year-old male driver from the vehicle.”

The driver was airlifted to a hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, police noted.

Police are warning motorists there may be some delays on the north part of the Sand Key Bridge and a section of South Gulfview Boulevard as the investigation continues.

The driver’s name is not yet being released.

An estimate on the damage to Cesare’s has not yet been released.
