Lifeguard Towers Moved Back in Preparation for Isaac

Lifeguard towers were moved back Sunday in preparation for Tropical Storm Isaac.

Patrick Brafford expects to fly red flags Monday.

Brafford, Clearwater Beach Patrol supervisor, said the beaches are expected to be open and lifeguards are expected to be on duty as Tropical Storm Isaac swirls off Florida’s coast.

And lifeguard towers, which already have been moved back from the surf, should be topped with a red flag to notify beach goers of a high hazard.

The towers are built on skids that allow them to be easily moved to the higher ground on the back part of the beach.

Lifeguards are also ready with medical supplies, warning flags and fuel, Brafford said.

They will assess the rip currents and debris in the water from Tropical Storm Isaac before closing the beaches, he said. If the beach is closed it would include the patrolled areas from south beach near Beach Walk north to about Avalon Avenue, Brafford said.
