Pill Drop, Shredding Event Set By Clearwater Police

Clearwater residents can get rid of old documents and unwanted prescription pills in the same location Saturday.

CLEARWATER, FL — Residents behind on their spring cleaning will get a hand of sorts this weekend courtesy of the Clearwater Police Department. The agency has announced a combination document shredding and prescription pill drop meant to make it easier – and safer – to dispose of these items.

Saturday's event is being staged between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. in conjunction with the city’s solid waste department. Pro Shred, under the supervision of police officers and detectives, will conduct the shredding service on site at no cost to residents. The event takes place in the parking lot near L.A. Fitness at Westfield Countryside Mall.

“Identity theft is a growing problem,” the agency explained in an email. “Storing old, unwanted documents at home with sensitive personal information on them is not a good idea. They should not be put out with the trash as they can be stolen.”

As for the pill drop portion of the April 29 event, residents may bring unwanted, outdated or unused prescriptions for proper disposal.

Both collections are limited to residents of Clearwater only. All residents need to do is pull up and police officers, sanitation workers and other staff will take items from them for disposal, the police department’s email said.
