Police Identify Motorcyclist Killed in Causeway Boulevard Crash

Crash shut down lanes on Causeway Boulevard for a couple hours Saturday night.

Justin Leigh Asmundo, of Brentwood Place, Tampa, was the motorcyclist killed in a crash that partially shut down Causeway Boulevard Saturday night, Clearwater Police investigators announced Sunday.

Asmundo was driving a yellow 2004 Suzuki GSX, east in the curb lane of Causeway Boulevard, just before the before the bridge and west of Island Way.

Witnesses told investigators Asmundo was driving recklessly and faster than the speed limit, which is 30 m.p.h. Asmundo changed lanes and went “airborne” over the Memorial Causeway bridge, according to police. He lost control of the Suzuki, and it hit a median curb, ejecting Asmundo. Asmundo hit a tree in the median and died at the scene.

Only one lane in each direction was open to traffic at the crash site. Drivers in one eastbound lane were directed into the westbound lanes, where they could continue driving east. The crash occurred at 9:56 p.m. and the whole road reopened at 11:50 p.m.
