Prospect Lake Park Water Quality Improvement Project Starts

Construction started recently to improve the water quality at Clearwater’s Prospect Lake Park.

The $800,000 project will occur in two phases. First, crews will dredge about 4,300 cubic yards of material from the lake bottom. The sediment is comprised from a number of different sources including nitrogen.

Then, the plan calls for enlarging the lake to the south and planting wetland plants in the southwest corner of the lake. That is tentatively scheduled to begin in January 2013 and to be complete that summer.

“These water quality improvements will benefit the downtown drainage district, which ultimately discharges to Clearwater Harbor,” said Ed Chesney, the city's environmental manager in a press release.

The park is located in the downtown area near Prospect Avenue and Franklin Street. Funding for the project comes from the city's stormwater utility fee.
