Clearwater Bus Crash: Details Released

A school bus driver had to be extricated from his vehicle following a Tuesday afternoon crash in Clearwater.

CLEARWATER, FL — The Clearwater Police Department is investigating a crash involving a school bus that occurred Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of Drew Street and Fort Harrison Avenue.

According to the agency, Joseph Dale Morgan, 52, of Clearwater was driving a bus with one child on board south on Fort Harrison Avenue around 3 p.m. Jan. 3. At that time, a Kia driven by Edward Michael Burke, 58, of Palm Harbor was headed west on Drew.

"The preliminary investigation shows that the Kia ran a red light and triggered the collision," an email from the police department said.

It took Clearwater firefighters more than 40 minutes to extricate Morgan from the "mangled wreckage of the vehicle," the email noted.

The male student who was on board Morgan's bus was not injured.

Police say Morgan and Burke were both hospitalized following the crash. Their conditions have not yet been released.
