CLEARWATER, FL — The Clearwater Police Department is asking motorists to steer clear of Sunset Point Road in the area of U.S. 19 Friday evening following a seven-vehicle crash that included a school bus.

“All lanes of Sunset Point Road are shut down at this time,” the agency reported in an email to media sent just before 5 p.m. Jan. 20. “One of the vehicles involved was a school bus with 15 children on board.”

Police say no children were injured. Five people, however, have been taken to the hospital for treatment, the agency reported.

"Preliminary information indicates an SUV Hyundai that was northbound on the access road for U.S. 19 did not yield to a Clearwater Fire & Rescue Department vehicle responding to a call with lights and sirens activated," an email from the police department said. "The rescue truck was eastbound on Sunset Point Road and was trying to turn left at the time of the collision."

Police say the initial impact led to a chain reaction that involved seven vehicles in total. Two of the five people injured are employees of the fire department. The most seriously injured person, the email said, was the 64-year-old driver of the SUV, the email noted.
