Three Swimmers Rescued off Clearwater Beach

Lifeguards rescued three swimmers who got caught in a rip current while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off Clearwater Beach on Thursday morning.

Three swimmers got caught in a rip current while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off Clearwater Beach on Thursday morning.

Clearwater Fire and Rescue performed CPR on an unresponsive 50-year-old woman pulled from the gulf near lifeguard tower five at 10:52 a.m, according to Elizabeth Watts, public safety spokeswoman.

Rescue workers were able to get a pulse, and the woman was taken to , Watts said. Two of her family members were also helped to shore. They refused medical treatment, Watts said.

Lifeguards have replaced the red flags flown earlier this week after Debby washed through the area with yellow ones. These are to advise swimmers to use caution.

"Although the surf appears to be somewhat calm, there are still dangerous currents below the surface," Watts wrote in a release.
