33 Birds Picked Up at Belcher Road Home

An owner surrendered 33 birds and one dog to SPCA Tampa Bay in Largo on Wednesday.

More than 30 birds were found Nov. 14 at a home on South Belcher Road in South Clearwater.

Pinellas County Animal Services reportedly received a complaint about animal noise coming from a Belcher Road home. When animal services staff arrived, they found at least 33 birds and 11 dogs, so they called SPCA Tampa Bay to help with the birds, said Jill Purl, lead investigator for SPCA Tampa Bay.

The animals' owners were "overwhelmed" and voluntarily surrendered 33 of the birds and one dog to the SPCA. The animals appeared to be well cared for, and no charges are pending. The SPCA will go back and check on the remaining birds next week. The family used to breed dogs, Purl said.
