Bayhead Skate Park Plans Approved

The design and construction of a skate park at the Bayhead Complex was approved on Nov. 20.

Last December the Largo City Commission approved relocating the city's skate park to the Bayhead Complex because of construction at the Highland Recreation Center. It will take about eight weeks to construct the park, Largo Parks Superintendent Greg Brown said.

The approximately 12,000-square-foot skate park will be designed for bikes and skateboarders. It will be located just north of the basketball courts at the Bayhead Complex. The park will have several new concrete features, including a dry swimming pool, which is one of the "hottest" items out there, Brown said.

The selected skate park design by Misiano Skate Parks will use at least four pieces of the old skate park. Before the skate park at Highland Recreation was closed, users shared with the city what they liked best about the park. The favorite parts of the old park will be incorporated in its new location, Brown said.

Brown said the skate park will fit nicely with the new Bayhead Ponds Park. The ponds behind the park were recently cleaned, and the trail was recently added as part of a city stormwater project.

The Largo City Commission approved $119,000 for the design and construction of the park off of Seminole Boulevard. A total of $150,000 was budgeted for the project. Remaining funds will provide lighting, fencing and other amenities, which will be approved at a later date.  

Largo's skate park opened originally in 2003 at the Highland Recreation Center. As part of the construction on the new Highland Complex, part of the new building will be on the former skate park site.
