Best Cuban Sandwich in Area? Pepe's Perhaps

This editor has become loyal to this Lutz food truck.

So much has been written about the Cuban sandwich, from its early days feeding famished cigar factory workers to last year’s playful debate between Tampa and Miami about which city could claim the delight as its own.

To me, the most interesting thing is how you can get something so tasty from some of the most mundane ingredients found in a kitchen.

I don’t fuss about what distinguishes a “real Cuban” from an impostor like some do; I just want to know whether it’s going to make my mouth happy or not. In both cases, though, Pepe's food truck on U.S. 41 North and Lutz Lake Fern Road comes through.

Most people swear the best cubanos are found in Ybor City. But the one served by Pepe’s is as good as any other Cuban I’ve ever had.

The meats have flavor but not an overbearing saltiness, the mustard’s got bite and the pickles have just enough firmness. I usually wash it down with a can of Coco Rico soda. Grand total? Just less than $7.50.
