Speaking to reporters at the scene, Chief James Dobson of the Opa-Locka Police Department said that the athletes were visiting someone at a home when gunfire erupted.

"There was approximately 15 rounds fired from a handgun, striking both victims," the police chief explained.

FIU alerted students and faculty to the shooting through a community alert.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the students and their families," FIU officials said.

School officials said they were not immediately aware of the condition of the students.

Miller was treated at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center and released.

"That's my baby. I'm just glad he's still here," Miller's mother told NBC 6.

"Whoever did it is a coward anyway," Miller's father added.
