Accused Florida School Shooter Was 'Apologetic'

Marjory Stoneman Douglas students have decided to go ahead with a dazzling senior prom that also honors all four slain seniors.

PARKLAND, FL — When police first took accused Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz into custody, officers noted his demeanor as apologetic, according to an internal report released Friday by the Broward Sheriff's Office. It was hours after Cruz was accused of carrying out his murderous Valentine's Day rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The troubled 19-year-old former student allegedly killed 17 students and faculty members with his AR-15 assault rifle.

The report noted Cruz' "very white" teeth, his "square" posture, "straight" hair, "thin" build and "freckles."

But officers also reported that Cruz exhibited a "condescending" demeanor and characterized his language as "abusive."

They described Cruz' speech in the report as "low" and "soft."

While the incident has forever changed the lives of the surviving students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, the students have decided to go ahead with their senior prom.

In view of what they've been through, the students are planning a dazzling prom that also honors the four slain seniors. The Westin Fort Lauderdale Beach Resort has reportedly donated its ballroom and all of the food for the event, a gift that has been valued at $50,000.

"We definitely want students to just walk in there and just be like 'wow,'" senior class president Julia Cordover told Local 10 news in Miami. "Definitely sparkles, definitely like popping colors. We want to keep it mostly a secret but we're excited for the students to find out."

Her vice president Lauren Hetzroni did tell the television news crew that the memorial would be the "first thing they see when they walk in."

The prom dresses have also been donated while the students can also take advantage of free hair services ahead of their big night.

In addition to the suspect report, the Broward Sheriff's Office also released a number of redacted supplemental police reports that described the chaotic scene at the school in greater detail as officers arrived in the initial moments after Cruz allegedly opened fire in the freshman building.

Earlier this week, Cruz said through his attorney that he would plead guilty to murder charges if prosecutors agree to drop plans to seek the death penalty, an offer that was not accepted.
