Escape to Miami: Miami-Dade Lifeguards Become 'Power Buddies'
A group of Miami-Dade lifeguards volunteered their time Sunday as "power buddies" to help some special contestants Escape To Miami.

MIAMI, FL — A group of Miami-Dade lifeguards became "power buddies" on Sunday to help some special contestants cross the finish line in the annual Escape to Miami Triathlon.
"The volunteered lifeguards paddled alongside swimmers — differently-abled athletes — at times towing them towards the finish line," said a spokesperson for Miami-Dade Fire Resuce. "They were there to assist and potentially render help to anyone who needed assistance."
The six volunteer lifeguards were also ready to help anyone who ran into problems along the course.

"Fortunately they were not needed for any rescues this morning," the spokesperson explained.
As “power buddies,” they helped contestants who were able to propel themselves to give everyone a chance to experience the "thrill and camaraderie of crossing the finish line as a team," said the spokesperson.

"As a reciprocal benefit, MDFR Lifeguards feel the love while paddling next to the athletes that are competing," the spokesperson added. "This is a life-changing experience for both sides."
