Española Way Shooting Leaves 1 Dead, 1 Wounded

MIAMI BEACH, FL — A flurry of gunshots rang out early Saturday morning along the 200 block of Española Way, leaving one man dead, another wounded and two Miami Beach police officers suffering from minor injuries.

The shooting, which happened around 2:37 a.m., led to a wild police chase that ended in nearby Surfside, where two Miami Beach Police cars were involved in a crash, according to Ernesto Rodriguez of the Miami Beach Police Department.

The wounded man was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center by Miami Beach Fire Rescue. He is expected to survive. The other man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rodriguez said a Miami Beach police officer heard the initial shots and was the first to arrive at the shooting scene.

"A potential subject vehicle was located not far from the scene. While another fled," Rodriguez said. "A pursuit ensued. Our officer witnessed an occupant display a firearm from within the vehicle and later lost sight of that vehicle. A third vehicle was located near 83 Street and Collins Avenue which also fled. This resulted in a pursuit where two MBPD vehicles were involved in a crash near 91 Street and Harding Avenue."

Rodriguez said the officers suffered minor injuries in the crash. The suspects got away.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us," Rodriguez said early Saturday morning. "Detectives and crime scene investigators are are on the scene of the shooting gathering evidence."
