Here are the top five stories in Miami today:

1. Parkland shooter Nikolas Cruz's defense wants the judge overseeing the case disqualified after being lectured for being "unprofessional" after the defense abruptly rested right as the penalty trial was set to begin this week. Prosecutors responded that even critical or hostile comments by the judge are not grounds for disqualification, and said the judge has been respectful to both sides. (NBC Miami)

2. Authorities detained two men on Friday night following what police said was a reported bomb threat on a plane at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) that turned out to be unfounded. FLL described it as "isolated to a single flight" and "not having widespread airport impact." (WSVN)

3. Cuban migrants were captured by the U.S. Coast Guard off the Florida coast on Saturday morning. It happened at approximately 8:15 a.m. at Dania Beach. Officials said no medical concerns were reported by any of the migrants. (WPLG Local 10)

4. Transport Workers Union (TWU) Local 291 has endorsed Marleine Bastiene for Miami-Dade Commissioner in District 2. The announcement came one week after Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava endorsed Bastien. Her backing includes FLIC Votes, Florida College Democrats, Florida for All, Florida Rising, Ruth’s List Florida, SAVE Action PAC and SEIU Florida. (Florida Politics)

5. FIU will commemorate Hispanic Heritage Month, from September 15 to October 15, with more than a dozen events celebrating the experiences of Hispanic people including panel discussions, hora locas, student spotlights on social media and more. It comes as FIU was ranked No. 1 in awarding bachelor's and master's degrees to Hispanics. (Miami's Community News)

  • A Lauderhill fire rescue was damaged after someone shot at it while crews responded to a call. Three paramedics were inside the truck at the time of the shooting. No one was injured. An investigation is underway. (WSVN)
  • Authorities released a new video this week that shows moments before a wrong-way crash killed five people on the Palmetto Expressway. Police have identified the driver as Maiky Simeon. (CBS Miami)
