FL Reports 46,442 Coronavirus Cases As More Businesses Reopen

More restaurants, retailers and hair salons reopened in Florida Monday as health officials reported a total of 46,442 coronavirus cases.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — A number of restaurants, retailers and hair salons reopened in South Florida Monday as health officials reported a total of 46,442 confirmed cases of the coronavirus Monday, an increase of 854 cases over the previous 24-hour period.

Eight Florida counties reported 24 new deaths over the previous 24-hour period compared to 8 deaths Sunday, 47 Saturday and 41 on Friday. The total number of deaths rose to 1,997 Monday, up from 1,973 a day earlier.

Miami-Dade reported five new deaths. Broward County reported two more deaths.

Lee County reported 11 new deaths. Hillsborough County reported two new deaths.

Brevard County reported one new death as did Pinellas County, Polk County and Walton County.

Florida had a 6.9 percent positive test rate for the virus based on a. total of 677,710 tests that had been administered as of Monday. The number of hospitalizations in Florida increased to 8,304 from 8,230 a day earlier.

A total of 26,758 cases— or some 58 percent of the state's total — were in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties. Palm Beach County businesses partially reopened on May 11 while Miami-Dade and Broward counties partially reopened Monday. Some cities like Miami and Miami Beach have opted to open later.

Miami-Dade reported 15,864 confirmed cases of the virus as of Monday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 6,322 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 4,572 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,653 cases as of Monday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,679cases.
