Florida Coronavirus Deaths Surpass 2,000 Mark

The number of coronavirus deaths in Florida surpassed the 2,000 mark Tuesday.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of coronavirus deaths in Florida surpassed the 2,000 mark Tuesday.

State health officials reported a total of 2,052 deaths involving Florida residents as of Tuesday, up from 1,997 a day earlier.

Eighteen Florida counties reported 55 new deaths over the previous 24-hour period compared to 24 deaths on Monday, eight on Sunday, 47 Saturday and 41 on Friday.

The number of coronavirus cases in Florida climbed to 46,944 on Tuesday, an increase of 502 cases over the previous 24-hour period.

The state also continues to suffer an unprecedented economic cost from the virus. Gov. Ron DeSantis said the state has distributed more than $2.65 billion in reemployment assistance for Floridians, more in the past 10 weeks than over the last five years.

DeSantis announced the state is opening five new walk-up testing sites in Daytona Beach, North Lauderdale, Miramar, Opa-Locka and Sarasota. Each site will be able to test up to 200 people per day.

Miami-Dade reported 12 new deaths on Tuesday. Broward County reported one more death. Palm Beach County reported nine new deaths.

Hillsborough and Sarasota counties each reported five new deaths.

Pasco County reported three new deaths as did Pinellas County, Charlotte County and Collier County. Polk County reported two new deaths from the virus as did Walton County.

Dixie County reported its first death from the virus. Calhoun County reported one new death as did Duval County, Escambia County, Manatee County, Martin County and St. Lucie County.

Florida had a 6.9 percent positive test rate for the virus based on a. total of 717,162 tests that had been administered as of Tuesday. The number of hospitalizations in Florida increased to 8,494 from 8,304 a day earlier.

A total of 27,010 cases — or some 57 percent of the state's total — were in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Miami-Dade reported 15,942 confirmed cases of the virus as of Tuesday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 6,369 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 4,699 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,670 cases as of Tuesday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,699 cases.
