Florida Reports 40,982 Cases; Palm Beach County Partially Reopens
The number of coronavirus cases in FL climbed to 40,982 Monday as Palm Beach joined much of the state in partially reopening businesses.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of new coronavirus cases in Florida climbed to 40,982 Monday as Palm Beach County joined much of the state in partially reopening businesses, including restaurants retailers, hair salons and nail salons amid occupancy and social distancing restrictions.
Eleven of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths Monday over the previous 24-hour period, including Palm Beach County.
Miami-Dade County reported three new deaths. Broward County reported three new deaths. Palm Beach County reported one new death.

Lee County reported three new deaths. Clay County reported two new deaths. Hillsborough County reported one new death as did Collier County, Hendry County, Osceola County, Pinellas County and Volusia County.
Palm Beach County's top prosecutor told Patch in an interview the state totals could be giving Floridians a false sense of security though he had confidence in his county officials. He said state health officials only count deaths of Florida residents while excluding visitors from other states who die in Florida. See Palm Beach Sees Drop In Some, But Not All Crime

"We’re not out of the woods by a long shot," State Attorney Dave Aronberg said in the interview. "I realize the motivations for reopening. Florida cannot stay closed forever, but we have to be cautious, and not pretend that this problem is going away and we’ve already flattened the curve because neither is true."
Aronberg said he is also concerned by possible underreporting of cases and deaths that occur in Florida's nursing homes and prisons.
"To this day, the coronavirus numbers from the state health department do not match the numbers provided by the nursing homes themselves," Aronberg said.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis told reporters Monday the 65 partially reopened counties collectively reported a one-day positive test rate under 1.43 percent during the most recent reporting period.
"If you look at today's report from the numbers on May 10 — of the 405 new cases — only 187 of them were in phase one counties," the governor said.
Miami-Dade and Broward County remain the only two counties that have not partially reopened businesses but that is likely to occur next week at least in Miami-Dade.
Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties are considered the epicenter of Florida's outbreak accounting for some 60 percent of the total cases.
Monday's total includes 386 more confirmed coronavirus cases reported throughout the state over the previous 24-hour period.
The total number of deaths reported in the state from the virus rose to 1,735 Monday, up from 1,721 a day earlier.
The state had a 7.3 positive rate for the virus out of 561,741 tests that had been administered as of Monday. The number of hospitalizations increased in Florida to 7,224 from 7,171 a day earlier.
Miami-Dade reported 14,167 confirmed cases as of Monday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 5,882 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 3,889 cases.
Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,448 cases as of Monday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,512cases.
