Florida Surpasses 40,000 Coronavirus Cases

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Florida hit another milestone Saturday as the total reached 40,001.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Florida hit another milestone Saturday as the total reached 40,001.

The new total includes an additional 802 confirmed cases of the virus in the previous 24-hour period.

Florida health officials said the number of deaths in the state from the virus had also risen to 1,715. Eleven of Florida's 67 counties reported a total of 46 new deaths over the previous 24-hour period.

Miami-Dade reported 14 new deaths Saturday. Broward County reported nine more deaths. Palm Beach County reported eight new deaths.

Lee County reported three new deaths as did Sarasota County. Charlotte County reported two new deaths as did Manatee County and Polk County. Flagler County reported one new death as did Seminole County and Walton County.

Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties are considered the epicenter of Florida's new coronavirus outbreak with some 60 percent of the state's total cases.

The state had a 7.6 positive rate for the virus out of 528,413 tests that had been administered as of Saturday. The number of hospitalizations has increased in Florida to 7,093 from 6,929 a day earlier.

Miami-Dade reported 13,841 confirmed cases as of Saturday, more than any other county. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 5,780 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes West Palm Beach, reported 3,798 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 1,400 cases as of Saturday. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 1,505 cases.
