Florida Surpasses 8,000 Coronavirus Deaths

The death toll in Florida from the coronavirus surpassed the 8,000 mark Saturday as health officials reported another 8,502 new cases.

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The death toll in Florida from the coronavirus surpassed the 8,000 mark Saturday as health officials reported another 8,502 new cases of the virus.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the state rose to 526,577 on Saturday from 518,075 one day earlier.

Florida health officials reported a total of 8,109 deaths from the virus as of Saturday up from 7,927 deaths a day earlier. That's an increase of 182 new deaths over the previous 24-hour period. State health officials also reported another 129 deaths involving non-Florida residents who died in the state.

Thirty-seven of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths Saturday. That compares with 180 new deaths Friday, 122 new deaths Thursday, 221 new deaths Wednesday (health officials reported 220), 245 new deaths on Tuesday, 74 new deaths Monday, 63 new deaths Sunday and 179 new deaths last Saturday.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported 131,217 cases of the virus as of Saturday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 61,614 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach, West Palm and Boca Raton, reported 36,600 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 32,268 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 31,395 cases.
