Florida Surpasses 8,000 Coronavirus Deaths

TALLAHASSEE, FL — The death toll in Florida from the coronavirus surpassed the 8,000 mark Saturday as health officials reported another 8,502 new cases of the virus.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the state rose to 526,577 on Saturday from 518,075 one day earlier.

Florida health officials reported a total of 8,109 deaths from the virus as of Saturday up from 7,927 deaths a day earlier. That's an increase of 182 new deaths over the previous 24-hour period. State health officials also reported another 129 deaths involving non-Florida residents who died in the state.

Thirty-seven of Florida's 67 counties reported new deaths Saturday. That compares with 180 new deaths Friday, 122 new deaths Thursday, 221 new deaths Wednesday (health officials reported 220), 245 new deaths on Tuesday, 74 new deaths Monday, 63 new deaths Sunday and 179 new deaths last Saturday.

• Sarasota County reported eight new deaths.
• Seminole County reported eight new deaths.
• Bay County reported six new deaths.
• Lake County reported six new deaths.
• Escambia County reported five new deaths.
• Lee County reported five new deaths.
• Pasco County reported five new deaths.
• Volusia County reported five new deaths.
• Hernando County reported four new deaths.
• Osceola County reported four new deaths.
• Indian River County reported three new deaths.
• Marion County reported three new deaths.
• Okaloosa County reported three new deaths.
• St. Lucie County reported three new deaths.
• Suwannee County reported three new deaths.
• Brevard County reported two new deaths.
• Collier County reported two new deaths.
• Hillsborough County reported two new deaths.

Florida reported a statewide positive rate of 13.32 percent based on 3,952,028 tests as of Friday.

The state reported 30,251 total hospitalizations up from 29,730 hospitalizations a day earlier. That represents an increase of 521 new hospitalizations over the previous day.

Miami-Dade, which includes Miami and Miami Beach, reported 131,217 cases of the virus as of Saturday. Nearby Broward County, which includes Fort Lauderdale, reported 61,614 cases. Palm Beach County, which includes Palm Beach, West Palm and Boca Raton, reported 36,600 cases.

Hillsborough County, which includes Tampa, reported 32,268 cases. Orange County, which includes Orlando, reported 31,395 cases.
