Here are the top five stories in Miami today:
1. New York developer Dependable Equities is proposing a new tower in Fort Lauderdale that would including 830 multifamily units, 12,798 square feet of commercial space and 951 parking spots. It would be one of the tallest towers in Fort Lauderdale, if approved. (The Next Miami)
2. The Horrorland Scream Park, a haunted walk-through attraction, is returning to Miami at Jungle Island. It was voted the "Best and Most Original Halloween Attraction" in South Florida by Timeout in 2020 and 2021. The Halloween-themed event kicks off Friday, September 23 and is open rain or shine on Thursdays and Sundays from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays until October 31. 3. Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) says deputies responded to the Collins Community Center at 800 N.E. 3rd Ave. after a witness alerted them of a man talking to children on Thursday. Police say the suspect is a registered sex offender, Frederick Muller. He was arrested on failure to comply with registration law, a sex offender violation charge of failure to register as required and a sexual predator violation of renew information on driver's license within 48 hours. 4. Since 2017, the Public Corruption Unit from the Broward State Attorney's Office has charged 40 law enforcement officers, including detention deputies, following use of force allegations. An investigation found four officers have been found guilty, but most officers have been acquitted or have had their cases dismissed. (NBC Miami)
5. South Florida residents shared thoughts over the passing of Queen Elizabeth in a condolence book located in the lobby of the British Consulate General in Miami. Residents can come and sign between the hours of 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. "It's been incredible to see the outpouring of sympathy and respect people have shown across the United States and indeed across the world," said Miami British Consul General Rufus Drabble. - City of Miami police are searching for an 81-year-old man who has been reported missing. Jesus Serpa was last seen in Miami's Model City area wearing a red and black plaid shirt and black pants. (WPLG Local 10)
- Miami will start offering non-stop flights to Australia soon, according to the head of Qantas. It will be part of the airline's Project Sunrise initiative. (The Next Miami)
