Knife-Wielding Man Shot By North Miami Police Officer

A North Miami police officer opened fire on a knife-wielding man, according to police.

NORTH MIAMI, FL — A North Miami police officer opened fire on a knife-wielding man Friday who "charged" at a fellow officer, according to the agency.

"Officers repeatedly utilized de-escalation skills, however, the subject charged at an officer with a knife in his hand, causing a fellow officer to discharge his firearm to protect the officer," North Miami police said.

WPLG-TV reported Friday night the man later died after being shot by the officer.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will conduct an investigation into the shooting because it involves a police officer.

"Although the subject was still armed with the knife, officers continued de-escalation efforts, respecting the sanctity of life, until he was disarmed and safely secured," North Miami police said. "Officers performed life-saving techniques until Fire Rescue arrived."

The shooting occurred around 1:45 p.m. at NE 11th Avenue and 125th Street after police received a call from an elderly woman, who said she was being stalked and followed by a man.

"The female advised that she was being stalked and followed by a known male," North Miami police said. "The female indicated she had an injunction order for the subject to stay away from her."

Police said the man was taken to a local hospital. The knife was recovered by police at the scene..
