Here are the top stories in Miami today:

1. City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez was in New York City for political fundraisers while the city and surrounding area were getting battered by wind and rain from Hurricane Ian, including tornadoes and flooding. The mayor's social media channels did not suggest he was in New York City, and he kept a low-profile in The Big Apple as the storm played out. (New York Post)

2. Six people were injured on Miami Beach Friday by a powerful wave, and all were taken to the hospital, according to Miami Beach Police. Photos taken at the scene showed victims with cuts on their arms and legs. The rough waves and king tide made the water particularly dangerous and forced lifeguards to move to higher ground. (WSVN)

3. Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was carted off field on a stretcher Thursday after suffering an injury to his head and neck in Cincinnati. He is expected to be discharged and return to South Florida with the football team, according to the Dolphins. ESPN Commentator Stephen A. Smith called for the Dolphins to be held accountable for the injury. (WPLG Local 10, ESPN)

4. A proposed plan to allow advertising billboards in three of the Miami's larger waterfront parks is moving forward after a vote by city commissioners. The proposal will impact Bayfront Park, Maurice A. FerrΓ© Park, and Virginia Key Beach Park Trust. The legislation is being sponsored by Commissioner Joe Carollo. (Miami Today)

5. Zoetic Stage's Stuart Meltzer is bringing Lynn Nottage's "Mlima's Tale" to South Florida. Nottage is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner. The show made its premiere in New York City back in 2018 and will be in Florida for the first time. (Time Out Miami)
