Miami Beach Construction Worker Impaled

A worker was impaled at a Miami Beach construction site along Washington Avenue on Monday.

MIAMI BEACH, FL — A 35-year-old construction worker was impaled Monday morning when he fell between floors at a Miami Beach construction site. The incident happened in the 2000 block of Washington Avenue, according to the Miami Beach Fire Department.

Division Chief Jorge Linares of the Miami Beach Fire Department told Patch that the worker later passed away after his torso was impaled on a reinforcing bar.

"He was working up on the third-floor level and he fell down to the second level," Linares explained.

The worker was taken to Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition where he later died.

"He fell backwards and fell off a ledge that was there, an area that they were working on," said Linares. "We had to extricate him with our Jaws of Life and our power tools."

The Miami Beach Police Department and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration are both investigating the incident.

Workers are performing extensive renovations throughout the 2000 block of Washington Avenue.
