Here are the top stories today in Miami:
1. Miami-Dade County commissioners met Tuesday night and voted early Wednesday morning in favor of increasing their compensation. The proposal, which passed 7-5, sought to more than double commissioner salary benefits to nearly $130,000. (WPLG Local 10)
2. Miami commissioners voted unanimously Sept. 13 to amend city code and put themselves in charge of the park trust that operates historic Virginia Key beach. The vote comes amid opposition to a plan to relocate homeless people into tiny houses on the island. Virginia Key beach is the first park that Black Miami-Dade County residents were officially allowed to use during the segregation era. A second vote will be held in October. (Miami New Times)
3. Miami-Dade College has unveiled new technological advancements at its artificial intelligence center at its North Campus. The 13,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility will host the first undergraduate degree in applied AI in Florida and offer various courses on the subject. (WSVN)
4. Miami Beach transplant Peter Thiel, who moved to South Florida in 2020, is warning that housing prices and rent are too high in Florida. The Silicon Valley tech billionaire warned Florida risks becoming like California if the trajectory continues. (The Real Deal - Miami)
5. Jury selection was held on Tuesday in Miami in the trial of Mexican actor Pablo Lyle. The trial is expected to begin at the end of this week or next week on Tuesday. Lyle was charged with manslaughter in 2019 after a punch he allegedly threw during a road rage incident killed someone. (WPLG Local 10)

- On Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 10:43 a.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units responded to a gas leak near NW 198 Terrace and NW 85 Avenue. Upon arrival, fire crews found a ruptured gas line in the middle of the street near a construction area. Firefighters assisted the gas company in mitigating the leak. There were no injuries reported. - Join Miami- Dade County on Wednesday, Sept. 21, for Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's Career and Job Fair at the Miami-Dade Fair Expo Center. (Miami-Dade Parks via Facebook)
- A single-family residence located in the 700 block of Aledo Avenue of Coral Gables was sold on Aug. 19, 2022, for $2,200,000. That works out to $867 per square foot. (Subscription: Miami Herald)
