"The officer was trying to get to another location where he was being summoned to," said Perez. "Obviously our officers and our workforce are shaken up. We lost one of our own."

He said the officer was part of an enforcement action involving "nuisance-type complaints" and thefts along a canal.

Perez said the 46-year-old Brown was married with children and described him as a "devoted husband and father." He was assigned to the South District, Neighborhood Resource Unit.

"We all stand united," Perez said. "What we ask from the community, we ask you to continue to pray. We appreciate the support."

Video of the crash scene showed the officer's ATV alongside a tree. Perez said the crash is under investigation.

"When something like happens, we do have a lot of pain and a lot of hurt, but we also persevere really, really well," added Perez. "We'll stand up again for the officer, for his family, and we'll continue to support them."
