MIAMI, FL -- An 18-year-old Miami Senior High School student was in stable condition Friday after suffering a gunshot wound during what Miami police described as an accidental shooting.

Miami police said the incident happened at a home in the unit block of NW 24th Avenue when an adult in the home was handling a firearm.

"Apparently he was handling his gun, and in the midst of it, a shot went off," Officer Kenia Fallat of the Miami Police Department told Patch.

Police detained the adult who was handling the weapon at the time but no charges were immediately filed.

"It appears that it may have been accidental," Fallat said of the shooting. She said there were several teenagers in the home at the time.

The wounded teen was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center, according to police. He was shot in the forearm.

Jackie Calzadilla of Miami-Dade County Public Schools stressed that the incident did not occur on school property.

"All I can confirm is that one of our students was hit and transported to the hospital," she told Patch.

School was in session for Miami-Dade students on Friday at the time of the incident.
